A calenda is a traditional community procession from Oaxaca that brings people together through music, dance, celebration, and public participation. It is more than a parade: it is a living expression of cultural identity, collective joy, and shared belonging. In many Oaxacan communities, a calenda announces an important celebration such as a patron saint festival, wedding, graduation, or other communal event, inviting neighbors and families to join in the experience. Over time, the tradition has reflected a blending of Indigenous and Catholic influences, with local communities shaping it into a distinct expression of Oaxacan heritage.

The cultural values of la calenda are rooted in community, reciprocity, tradition, and visibility of culture in public space. A calenda is participatory rather than passive: people do not simply watch, they walk together, dance together, and celebrate together. This reflects a strong value of communal life that is especially important in many Oaxacan Indigenous and neighborhood traditions. Music, brass bands, chirimías, dancers, marmotas, and giant puppets all help transform the streets into a place of welcome, memory, and collective pride. Through this practice, communities pass down traditions across generations and affirm that culture belongs to everyone, not only to institutions or formal stages.

La calenda also represents the preservation of heritage through adaptation. For ENLACE the tradition of serenades as a project is important because it preserves cultural identity, strengthens community ties, and keeps alive a form of respectful and heartfelt communication. Serenades often involve family, friends, and neighbors, turning a personal gesture into a shared cultural experience. In this way, the tradition is not only about music, but also about honoring customs, celebrating relationships, and passing meaningful practices from one generation to the next.
